Are Side projects/earnings allowed at Facebook?

Does Facebook allow its employees to do side work (non competing), for example creating a Udemy course and earn out of it OR teach math/computer science over Youtube etc? What all companies allow such stuff? Google? Amazon? #tech #career #facebook #google #amazon

My old employer, when I asked about doing external things like this, said, "If you have time for that stuff, why isn't it being spent on work for the company?" That was EA Sports.

Would be great if someone working in Facebook can confirm.

I think everyone allows upto some extent , if you do more it will impact you. Can a fb employee please comment - what are the rules and who to tell

How can they tell you what to do in your spare time as long as you aren’t breaking non-compete and ethical rules?

No side projects allowed. FB blows. Don’t take my word for it, listen to current employees. https://www.teamblind.com/post/Is-it-worth-taking-a-paycut-to-go-to-fb-DbZxXmy7

It wasn't clear from the link (thanks from sharing though). Out of curiosity, does Amazon allow that?

Amazon zVjh74 Mar 28, 2020

Depends. Most companies won’t allow side projects that are even tangentially related to work they’re paying you to do. My advice is to check with HR or your Manager before getting too involved with a side project. Good luck!

They probably require a business ethics officer to evaluate it does not create a conflict. I would expect the same approval process if joining a board etc.

In general, if there is no business conflict then one should be allowed to wtf they want to do. Make sure you aren’t doing anything in those 9/10 hours of your actual job. And never use company supplied equipment. You should also read your employment contract.
