Are internships targeted/only open to diverse crowds (Google Step, FacebookU, etc...) as good on as resume as a SWE internship? Asking for a friend who is a sophomore in college FWIW.
I think Google EP would look almost as good as a regular swe internship since the interns get to work on actual Google code. FBU? Nah definitely not since you’re just working on a toy project.
Heard this years remote step is more akin to a toy project, while the SWE internship is also open source project.
Ahh didnt know that. Thats a bummer for interns.
As a sophomore, they're highly unlikely to get anything else from FAANG. Even unicorns are tough (I got a unicorn offer as a sophomore bc a recruiter misread my graduation year). So if they manage to pull off STEP or FBU or Microsoft's, that's fabulous
People get freshman and sophomore intern offers all the time. The reason I’m asking is because the person in question does have regular swe intern offers.
At that point it's a question of if they want to have the FAANG name. A regular internship will generally have more interesting projects (with the exception for Google this last summer), which makes it easier to talk about in future interviews
These programs are a negative on a resume because it shows that the candidate isn’t able to get a real internship. It’s also likely that they will expect continued special treatment and be a toxic influence.
