Are diversity internship programs as good as SWE internships on a resume?

Are internships targeted/only open to diverse crowds (Google Step, FacebookU, etc...) as good on as resume as a SWE internship?

Asking for a friend who is a sophomore in college FWIW.

These programs are a negative on a resume because it shows that the candidate isn’t able to get a real internship. It’s also likely that they will expect continued special treatment and be a toxic influence.

As a sophomore, they're highly unlikely to get anything else from FAANG. Even unicorns are tough (I got a unicorn offer as a sophomore bc a recruiter misread my graduation year). So if they manage to pull off STEP or FBU or Microsoft's, that's fabulous

At that point it's a question of if they want to have the FAANG name. A regular internship will generally have more interesting projects (with the exception for Google this last summer), which makes it easier to talk about in future interviews

    • I interned with Amazon after my freshman year (non diversity SWE internship), and know people who did Google and FB too. So it's definitely possible.

  • I think Google EP would look almost as good as a regular swe internship since the interns get to work on actual Google code. FBU? Nah definitely not since you’re just working on a toy project.
