Is it cheaper to eat chipotle everyday than buy groceries ?
I'll be looping for a role at Amazon for a L6 Data Scientist. However, I'm at 64 in Microsoft (one level away from Principal). Can I push for L7 ? If yes, what's the best time to do it? If they don't give me L7, I will likely not leave. Just stay at MS till I get Principal and then switch.
I’d tell them up front you’re only looking for an L6 role. By design, the committee needs to be the level of the candidate or higher. So tell them up front, because telling them after would likely require another round of interviews
Everything is negotiable if both sides have enough to offer, always.
In practicality, but in reality you get downleveled
64 matches to L6 mid mostly. I would rather wait for L65 here and then push for L7 in Amazon. But wait, why amazon then, push in MS itself, TC at 66 will be much higher than L7 in Amazon.
I thought L7 would be equivalent to L67, no?
L7 is such a wide range and my best educated guess is that's starts from MS high L65 to L67. I have seen people mostly going to L7 from L65 here. None I know could move to L7 from L64. None I have seen leaving MS after 66. ;)
Generally no (there can be exceptions of course). But leveling is determined by performance not negotiation. That said, it’s why it’s important for you to get the right interview loop setup for a given level. At Amazon, they typically will try to only have interviewers at the same level (or higher) you are interviewing for. If you’re trying to negotiate for a higher level, if anything, it will likely require a follow up loop (if you got the wrong folks). Also not directed at you (since I don’t know you) but 64 to an L7 is a huge jump. Even L6, is a jump.
L64 to L7, I have not seen ever. I asked recruiter to put me in L7 loop and was thrashed by BR. Recruiter told me it was 5-1 and BR raised his veto power. For L6, I have seen people going from L62 too. Again, I feel L6 is wide range in Amazon and over laps with 63 and 64 here.
