When I joined msft I got less than 100k$ worth of stocks, and I don’t think I was lowballed. With regular refreshers it won’t bring up my TC that much, if at all. I got an offer from Uber and they offered me 250k$ worth of stocks which spike up my new TC (280k first year including sign on) How do I evaluate paper stocks vs liquid stocks?? Are Uber stocks reliable enough? I don’t expect it to go way above the 409a price and feel somewhat content with the amount
I would not include sign on and moving bonus as part of TC.
Uber is pretty safe bet now. What you need to evaluate whether having than money in 2-4 years from now is worth that what you have now.
Eh, even with Google backing, Uber has gnarly network effects over Lyft in terms of customer base. They obviously have their own self driving car pilot that seems pretty car along, and the cash to buy good engineers to build it. Wouldn’t count them out.
Current tc and yoe?
If the stock is over a period of say 4 years, it might not end up well; given Google/waymo + lift is gonna negatively influence Uber a LOT
Meow 🐈 *senses interesting conversation*
How much is the 409a price?
How many shares did you get? Are you a senior engineer?

My rule of thumb is that I discount private company equity by 50% when evaluating offers. Others are less conservative. There's a chance uber shares may end up being worth nothing or at least less than the 409a price. Uber is a safer bet than smaller speculative startups without reliable revenue streams, but there's still substantial additional risk compared to MSFT. How you price in that risk is up to you.
That makes sense. Thank you
