Hello all i was curious to know with the new facebook and Google offices being built will they be ramping up hiring software engineers for the Austin location?? TC 285k 11 yoe
The eng presence in Austin at both is very limited but existent. Someone I spoke to about a month ago at FB during my recruiting process said there was no eng presence in Austin, but careers site does have this position: https://www.facebook.com/careers/jobs/458216678368772/ My opinion: it can often be career suicide to take an eng role in a place with no little-to-no eng presence, so tread carefully if you go that route
Or a good way to coast and relax
Engineering at Google Austin added ~300 people in 2019, and will definitely be adding more in 2020. Facebook does have engineers in Austin (I know a couple of them), but I don't think many (any?) of them work on the core product.
I don't have inside info but I believe that Google's plans for the new Austin buildings absolutely include growing the engineering presence substantially. I am unsure about FB.
One can only hope
FB Austin has Enterprise Engineers and is hoping to expand this role in Austin. It's essentially a swe role but you don't get to work on flashy consumer products. Typical projects involve either internal facing tools or some external facing tools for Enterprise customers on workplace. Total take-home still is likely much higher than other Austin jobs. I believe it's comparable to Bay area/Seattle SWEs with less equity. So if you want to stay in Austin and don't care about only working on the flashy products, definitely check it out. Happy to answer more questions via pm for anyone curious
Nice try ๐ Someone crazy might move from sde at Amazon to enterprise engineering because itโs FB. A fb recruiter tried to sell this role to me. I laughed so hard ๐ Moving from Google swe to ee/solution engineering/ production engineer at fb ๐
Just depends on where you want to work I guess. If you're a SWE at FB and value living in Austin more than working on consumer products, then currently it seems the only option is to switch roles. Google may offer SWE roles in Austin, but do they have external facing tools yet? Last I checked I believe they also were all internal facing tools. Obviously if you want mobility to move around to other positions in other offices the SWE title helps in the transition, but otherwise the EE role seems to do the same work as a SWE with comparable TC, so I don't see your point
m6r4, if the SWE ladder is same in Google, will the pay be same for these Engineering roles in Austin when compared to similar roles in other locations like Bay, Seattle etc? Not sure how much of a paycut Google does for Austin Engg roles bcz COL is lower.
