Hi SWEs of Blind, was wondering how difficult it is to get an uplevel in the more advanced stages when interviewing for another company. Ex:

Mid -> Senior
Senior -> Staff
Staff -> Principal

Assuming you come from Tier 1-3 companies.

    I went Google L3 -> startup -> Facebook E5 -> Google L6 in 8 years, never got promoted

    Probably would take about the same time to do that at FB without leaving, but would take at least 10 to do at Goog. And I wouldn't have had the chance to found a startup and run it into the ground for 2 years

    Looking to do this, senior to staff. Willing to go to smaller company if needed as long as offer is fair. Looking for advice and your experience doing so.

  • Much easier to get down leveled than up leveled. Most upleveling is YOE based. If your YOE is low, than almost no chance.

    It depends but uplevel is usually hard. Google will downlevel you. Exception is when switching from no 1 or hot areas to the next tiers. AWS to Oracle. Kubernetes when it came out etc
