Are we young SWE grads fucked now? With AI and ChatGPT evolve?
Better than being a data scientist right now
Quite the contrary. Old swe who lost the ability to pick up new skills are fucked. This category was always fucked. But it's going to accelerate
I said old swe who lost the ability to pick up new things. It appears you actually pick up things, have the drive and ride on your wisdom.
In my experience. Old people have a very, very, very difficult time changing their fundamental character. If the old people built up excellent personal habits, and an excellent character in their youth. Universally, they're scary bastards.
Y’all will be just fine, treat AI as a productivity accelerator and not as an enemy. We made it, it didn’t make us.
No, gpt is going to become more error prone since it just approximates what good code is. We make errors because we don't consider all error cases, it makes errors because it can't understand what it's doing, it's just guessing at what code is supposed to be without really knowing anything. It might be able to make a standalone or slightly context dependent react component better than you and in 1/1000th of the time, but you should be able to do more than that as a junior at this point. It's when complexity and lots of context are introduced that it makes things that might appear right but really it has no idea what is going on, it just might or might not hit the mark
10 years ago deep learning wasn't really on the map. If progress continues at even a fraction of the pace it has over the last decade then its hard to imagine anyone actually writing code in 20 years.
Right, maybe it'll be configuring things that code or using some other interface abstraction to manage automation, but things always move faster in technology anyway
If you’re scared of ChatGPT and AI hype yeah you’re fucked
Yeah new grads are deprecated, but mostly due to the job market
Job market is the biggest reason. Also, I wouldn't expect 500k TC with 6yoe. Those days aren't coming back until inflation makes 500k worth what 200k was worth in 2020
And no more 250k+ sde 2 salaries
Yeah. While I am cautiously optimistic about AI and it leading to more, rather than less employment opportunities, I don’t think we’ll see these mega salaries every again. I think devs will make good money still, and it might not change in the next 3-4 recruiting cycles, but I think mega salaries for kids straight out of college may come to an end.
The only future for new grads (especially US citizens ) is to start their jobs in a defense company like Lockheed or Northrop. You get peanuts but you will learn embedded programming.
What makes embedded programming better? Is it safer due to less competition in the field?
Generally it’s common in situations where speed is critical but resources are constrained. So you’ll get really good at writing efficient code

In this market network helps a lot. A referral can go a long way
I feel that is on the contrary, a referral doesn’t matter when there are a significant number of capable candidates without one
This , but unfortunately not lot of freshers will have that network 😢
