I’m currently an Art Director in Apple’s in-house marketing agency. Looking to move to NYC this year. What are some good companies in Manhattan I should be looking at? Years of exp: 10 (4 years at Apple, 6 years in Advertising Agencies)
I’ve heard good things about working in Amazon Wardrobe as well as Shopbop. Bad things about Amazon Imaging/Fashion though. Imaging/fashion for director/production roles have a very high attrition rate at Amazon. -source: worked with all of the above + creative agencies.
I don’t think I have it in me to work at agencies again. The hours are too long and I’ve gotten used to the nice ebb and flow of light weeks + heavy weeks at Apple. In agencies, everything was due yesterday, and I ended up working late pretty much every night. I’ve heard bad things about working at Amazon in the Bay Area so I am a little wary of that. I guess I’m trying to figure out what tech companies have marketing depts in NYC that I could look at.
I very specifically heard good things about amazon wardrobe and shopbop. I agree you should be wary and for sure I understand. Particularly at wardrobe, I know very good people. Amazon depends largely on the org. In general, I would recommend against amazon. I sadly can’t tell you the role I’m in but it’s the same sort of industry :)
I can't help you but thought I'd ask if you knew of any open roles for senior copywriters or ACD/copy. Thanks.
Spotify has one of the best in-house teams
Also been looking into Apple AD jobs as well, what's a typical TC range if you don't mind sharing?

Ha, it’s NYC. There are too many to name, honestly. I’d check with people at the AIGA chapter and get a sense of who’s doing well, hiring, etc. How did you like working at Apple? Always figured that’d be pretty awesome but who knows what it’s really like.
That’s a good idea, thanks! I was trying to get a sense of what companies have creative departments in NYC. I’m also thinking of Freelancing (unless I get an offer from one of the larger companies). I hate the term FAANG but kinda like that. Working at Apple is great. I love what I do. Everyone is really nice and even after 4 years, I am still learning so much. The only reason I am leaving is because I want to live in NYC. The commute is tough (3 hours round trip on Caltrain from SF to Cupertino) but this was the only company I could do it for. Apple is/was my dream job.
Argh, I interpreted your request as “agencies” which was silly of me. For companies: be wary of Amazon, but look at places like Digital Ocean. They have a bunch of illustrators on staff and do some gorgeous work. Their product design is good too, but probably outside your expertise at this point. Salesforce has offices in NYC and I highly recommend it. I’d be wary of Amazon. Bonobos has a good design department I believe. Probably toooons in fashion.
