Recently joined Amazon as a SDM, very surprised that I am expected to have a LinkedIn Recruiter account and cold call candidates. Most of my exp is in Fin Tech and recruiters handled all the sourcing there.

Is this expected at other Tech companies?

Doesn't seem to make a whole lot of Financial sense for the company right? They would pay a recruiter a third of what they pay me and probably get better results.

I guess so. Now it makes sense why Amazon SDMs contacting me via LinkedIn rather than Slack.

Only way to hire these days. Good luck relying on sourcers and recruiters.

  • I think it the market right now. Very few good candidate and extravagant TC demands. Recruiters will want to reach their target and bring candidate who will just about qualify. Of you need top tier engineer, you'll have to pursue yourself

Yes, it's common. Yes, it's a good example of something that someone else could do better for a fraction of the cost.

Bottom line for SDM in Amazon is to build, develop, and maintaining a high performing team. So, either you have someone that can help, or writing reqs and sourcing will be your life for the first 6-12 months.
