Will graduate soon with a masters in computer science. I have a program manager offer at Amazon (non technical, mostly an operations role). The pay is very low (especially considering my masters in cs) I also have a product manager offer at a no name company / small startup. I’d be one of the first couple product managers and learning from a senior PM. Salary is higher. Which route should I take? My goal is to ultimately become a product manager at FAANG. Is it worth to go to Amazon and then try to transfer to product? Or rather work as a junior PM after uni and refine my skills? Salary is of secondary importance for me
Startup. You will be learning more and your experience would also be more valued later for PM roles in other companies. Sounds like comp is also better there so that makes this a no brainer decision
If you have experience in the field - startup , otherwise I would stick to a place you can learn and have experienced people around you as a first workplace to get good understanding of the positions , processes etc That said - if it ain’t the position you want keep interviewing or take one and keep interviewing. Also - faang in your resume will be a better kickstart to a career and finding the next workplace than a higher role at a no name startup , that’s just life.
Go to the startup. Assuming you don't piss off the amzn recruiter/hiring manager, they can always hire you later
I began at a startup as a product specialist, made it to PM at the startup, and eventually moved to a larger company (current) in PM. I had no trouble making the move once I had a couple years under my belt Friend at the same startup moved from business analyst program manager at FAANG. Absolutely hates it and says it’s definitely just herding cats
Do you believe in the start up?

I’d do the startup tbh. If it does well, you won’t need fang
Agree. A product role is more fulfilling than a program manager role which is mainly herding all the cats so they don't get distracted and deliver a project the business wants. A product role is more strategic and you get to influence what gets built versus chasing delivery for something that's already been defined.
