Every now and then I read comments on how it gets harder as an external hire to get into FAANG at the high levels. It's a combination of less job openings, preference for internal candidate / culture issues, and at very high level you are specialized and so all the stars need to line up. To clarify, I'm not talking about passing the interview or how difficult it is, but just merely what opportunities or openings there are. I get the sense at E5/L5 it's still "easy", although for FB E5 expectations are high. What about E6/L6? Do lots of external people (not from G/F get hired)? Is it easier to enter this level as IC or manager? And E7/L7? It looks like external hire at this level is not common?
Not a lot of E6s but it’s not rare. E7 and above is rare for sure
It is rare as a percentage of 6 loops that end up with a 6 offer compared to 4-5
Is E6 that uncommon? I got an offer with 3 YOE.
Coming in external at E7, Microsoft partner+(68+), etc means you have a collection of people inside willing to put their careers on the line that you will succeed, and you nail the interview, and there is a project big enough yet with no one internal who can do it. Does happen. Usually requires the person be a "name" in their field who if you mention them in that field, most people know what they delivered.
Requirements may vary depending on location and role. I'm definitely someone who is not a name and passed G bar at L7 and MS bar at 68, but I had relevant (non domain specific) experienceas an Eng Manager and I'm on the east coast.

Very difficult and rare to get hired as E6 statistically. Nearly impossible as E7. Exceptions are existing well performing 6, 7 at Google
Referring to G/F scale or Uber scale? Uber has L5a = L5 and L5b=L6 right?
Uber has matching levels as far as comp. Comp-wise its exactly what you said. In practice the company does not have a hiring committee and there is no consistency on leveling like there typically is at FB/Google
