Are these boston branches in the same tier? What are the pros and cons of each
Athena recently downsized significantly and replaced a good deal of management. I think it’s still a turbulent time. Don’t know much about chewy apart from the fact that leadership sits in Miami. Wayfair has a lot of attrition, but if you stay you can climb the ladder fast. Pay is OK for the area. You could probably add HubSpot to your list. And there are other smaller players like Hopper.
Not all leadership sits in FL. In fact, that shift is beginning to change to more leadership in. Boston.
In product at wayfair, I see a lot of people from athena. Never heard of anyone going to athena from Wayfair. Just conceptually I’d consider the clear winner because it’s a fast growing e-commerce company.
Any idea of how ex-Athena people finds life in Wayfair, compared to back at Athena?
Couple folks I know where Athena left real quick. Apparently the political landscape sent them running.
Honestly after reading I'd stay away from the other 2. Do your homework on Wayfair also. It's actually a real mess with 2 c levels bailing
The C levels were let go/resigned. I think it’s encouraging and we’ll get some strong new leadership, in particular on the CTO side, but time will tell
I'm not sure Wayfair can afford to pay for a technically strong CTO. After all, we pay our CFO almost 4x our CTO.
As a SE who just left athenahealth, it sucks. The base pay is pretty mediocre for the area and the rsu portion got turned into phantom stock that is worthless until the company gets sold/changes hands again. There's a big chance you'll be working in a perl stack on a massive ancient legacy code base. Wayfair's pay seems okay but there's been a lot of stories about its bad tech practices and attrition. Read on blind for more. I don't know much about chewy but it seems like the best of the bunch and the most like a bay company if that's what you're into.
Roughly in same tier. Athena is in a worst state in the of pay and layoffs but neither Wayfair nor Chewy have great engineering practices.
I would definitely go with Chewy. The few engineers I know there are all pretty smart and say the engineering practices are pretty good and getting better all the time. Certainly the tech stack is a lot better. I would do some searching on here for posts about WF engineering to see what that's like. As people mentioned ex Athena people seem happy at WF so it must be even worse there
The pros and cons for Chewy are very team and role dependant. You could be following best practices using the latest and greatest languages and whatnot, or you could be fighting fires left and right to keep the legacy beast alive 🤷♂️ The lack of shares for juniors sucks tho
I worked at athena for a few years. Worst environment ive ever been in. 1/2 your time will be spent attending worthless D&I meetings.
None are worth joining based on my reads of blinds
