Atlassian vs Amazon

Both of these offers are for new grad SWE. Amazon: seattle Base 112 Rsus 80k over 4 years, schedule 5,15,40,40 Signing 26k first yr 22k second year 6.8k relo Tc: ~140 per year Atlassian: MTV Base 117 Rsus 100k evenly over 4 years Signing 30k Relo 10k 10% of base annual bonus Tc: ~190 first year and ~150 every year after Let me know what you guys think. I feel Atlassian has better wlb, but amazon is slightly more money after taxes and rent difference between the two locations and Amazon would make it slightly easier to get into other big companies like fb, google etc.. Both companies have said there is no room for negotiation.. Thanks for the help!

Who told you amazon would make it easier to get into fb, Google?

No one. Amazon just looks better on resume, so I am assuming I would have a higher chance of being noticed by a recruiter.

Amazon _Hokage_ Dec 16, 2019

You won’t have a hard time getting pinged by recruiters with either atlassian or Amazon on your resume.

Did you negotiate the Atlassian offer?

No

Other than cost of living difference, Atlassian seems like a no brainer. Better WLB, better culture (much less BS, much more investment in engineers for the long haul rather than sink or swim), better pay, better vesting schedule. I guess it does depend on the team at Amazon - they have a few teams doing really cutting edge stuff compared to us, but a lot of their teams are going to be no more interesting. Our promotion path from P3 to P4 is usually pretty quick, although I'm not clear on how quick. How is Amazon's? Also, are you allocated to a team already or would you be doing boot camp first?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I will probably be taking atlassian after talking to some people about it. I have not been placed on a team for either company. Cost of living in mtv is the main thing that stands out as a negative for atlassian.

MTV proper is pretty insane for housing costs, and Sunnyvale not much better. The MTV office is quite convenient to Caltrain (nearest stop on one if the shuttle and sort of walkable) which makes living up in SF practical (no cheaper, but may be more enjoyable depending on your preferences) and opens up some less expensive parts of San Jose or northern parts of the Peninsula which would probably be farther than you'd want to drive in traffic I wouldn't want to commute from the East Bay but many do and housing costs are lower there.

If you value TC, then Amazon. If you value culture and easy going life, then Atlassian. I say this because Atlassian doesn't really innovate that much anymore. I interviewed with them recently and got the feel they're just fixing things internally. Culture is nice... But pay is pretty low. One of the lowest I've seen for a tech company in Bay Area. Amazon TC is low for now but it'll increase a lot from L4 > L5 (~2 years). I faced the same decision a year back and I chose Amazon. Never regretted it.
