Atlassian vs Amazon

I have offers from both of these companies and am having a hard time choosing between them. Atlassian advantages: Better culture/WLB, potentially more growth/ownership since it's smaller Amazon advantage: Household name, more prestige (at least imo) I want to optimize for salary and career growth in the long-term, so I'm inclined to choose Amazon. I think it might make it easier to get a job at G/FB down the road. What do you think tech recruiters think about the two? Assume the difference between TC and quality of work to be to be insignificant.

Wow. Should I join Godzilla or the koala bear? Awww, but look how cute it is...

I don’t know about prestige, but ethically I would choose Atlassian.

Noted. Maybe I'm just cold hearted, but company scandals/bad practices don't bother me at all..

I had offers with HP Qualcomm and Dallas semi in 1995. I choose HP but should have chosen Qualcomm. Even though Bill and Dave hadn’t been directly involved in the company for many years after they passed away in 1996 things began to change at the company. The sacred cows were sacrificed. I worked briefly for the spin-off Agilent before taking an offer with another company outside the Bay Area so I could afford to start a family. Between 96 00 the Bay Area was getting more expensive faster than my salary was increasing due to the dot com bubble. Of coarse after waiting years the bubble finally broke months after I left. Meanwhile unknown Qualcomm already in a less expensive area who had offered lots of stock options expanded so fast they had a 4 way stock split. I chose HP for long term stability not prestige but that was also a factor. No one had heard of Qualcomm. Today HP has sold off much of its land (Apple HQ) and Facebook’s old campus. Etc. Tried to move employees to a facility in the swamps of Houston that floods frequently. Etc. It isn’t all bad. In the 70s HP was considered not as good of a stock investment as Eastman Kodak. Look where they are now.

Huh?

Oh, and Tesla’s current HQ while a Stanford property leased to them was HP Labs.

You haven’t mentioned the TC. We can help better if you provide TC for respective roles

Updated the OP- but the roles will pay similarly and I find both to be equally interesting.

lol prestige

Amazon Jexx Jun 14, 2018

Prestige is a very minor thing - you shouldn’t use this as a determining factor

I was in the same boat as you and I chose Atlassian. Amazon had bad work culture along with high work hours. Atlassian is a MUCH better work environment along with really great and caring people. Amazon might have a bigger name, but that doesn't mean you'll get to work on great things there. It's really team dependent. At least at Altassian you can shift and move around pretty easily.

Thanks! In terms of career growth, do you think having Atlassian as opposed to Amazon on your resume will harm you in any way?

Microsoft needcoffee Jun 14, 2018

I think just by looking at the name, Amazon is probably more prestigious (agrees with the poll as well). However, if you're actually planning to grow as an engineer, I think that it solely depends on the project you get. At Atlassian, you can shift around and do what you like or explore something new. And I've heard at Amazon it's very team dependent, so YMMV. I'm not as familiar with Amazon (didn't work there haha), but I do get contacted by their recruiters from time to time. So you can probably go there if Atlassian isn't your cup of tea.

Applied, didn't hear anything unfortunately.

Same with me. Applied as a new grad. Heard nothing back after 2 applications.

They did create Statuspage!

Microsoft needcoffee Jun 26, 2018

Well it's a weird story. The guy left Atlassian to create Statuspage, and then Atlassian got it. So I guess it's sort of both?
