Any recommendations on which ones would be good to join at this stage given waymo/tesla are too big already? Maybe even uber is also too big.. Would love to hear from those working for the above or similar companies..
Waymo too big? How do you know?
Its been at it for 10 years now.. i am guessing its grown too big already and its not a startup atleast.. so rate of growth will be slower than the other places..
You'd want to work someplace where they are leading the race or developing cutting edge tech. Uber ATG is neither.
Is this true from experience or peers’ experience? Which companies are leading?
Uber ATG being the only SDC/AV company to have killed a pedestrian it seems pretty apparent that their strategy and execution is wrong. The leader is Waymo for sure and Lyft Level 5 is the most behind. Aurora, Nuro, Cruise, Pony.ai, Drive.ai and Argo AI are far ahead of Lyft
Hey OP, Curious to know what your findings were over the last few months. In similar boat and trying to figure out best paths/options

Best LCOL or MCOL city?
I think it's more like a first one wins the game. So if you think start ups have a shot at it then only go. I would look for startups that are good acquisition targets read Otto.
I see your point. While I agree that there is a huge first mover advantage with someone like say Waymo, I am not sure its a winner take all market. One reason is that the market is huge. Second, there is still a long ways to go before scale happens (20k cars is not scale in automotive). Third, there isn’t really a network effect like what helped the fb and likes to capture market. I am guessing you’re suggesting Waymo. As for Otto.. thats the trouble child that is also part of Uber.. which I consider pretty big as well..
I strongly think it's a winner takes all market. A bit like search. Search has no network effect, but more the usage better the search gets. Similarly more the real world driving better it gets. Also I am not sure who would win. It could be Uber, Waymo, Tesla, GM or some other company as well. Otto was just an example for acquisition. Other would be cruise got purchased by GM.
