It’s amazing if you make 200k

For a family or single? I’m only 24 with nobody else to support.

You can honestly live comfortably on 100k but when you get here and see the lifestyles people live you will see what extra money can do for you

FAANG & Dropbox

All of the open Austin Dropbox eng roles are for the customer experience org and not the actual eng org. Run away if you value your sanity.

Outside of the weather it’s amazing. Great food, music scene, bar scene (6th, Rainey, Domain, etc.)

Weather is only really killer for 3-4 months, and that’s if the heat bothers you. 6 yrs in I actually have started to enjoy the summers. There’s nothing quite like spending a day at Barton Springs when it’s ragging hot outside. The winters are really nice - it’s 73 and sunny here right now. I love it here, zero regrets over leaving CA for a house that cost less than $500k, is bikable to work, and walkable to great restaurants, coffee shops, and bars. It’s a really fun town.

Fell in love with the summer. Nothing is better than running on the Austin trails in 100 F weather.

It is fine as long as you don't care about local politics. Austin might be blue (for the south) but the state is very red. The education system has gone to shit since I grew up there and wouldn't want my kids in the public school system.

Its a nice place to work. Especially the areas around Domain and UT. However if you go 10 miles in either direction from downtown Austin you will begin to see the wilderness of texas and vast empty lands. Austin has severe water issues every year, and in 2018 we didnt have safe drinking water in homes for 1 week. Not to mention water bill will set you back around $100 every month more or less.

Amazon BlindIy Jan 5, 2020

Wow, interesting, that’s like a years worth of water where I’m at...

Indeed YsQD63 Jan 5, 2020

You might have a leak or a problem? My water bill was $20 this month for a 2/2. The silt issue in 2018 was hella jank, that is true. Austin’s infrastructure has not scaled with the city.

Austin is one of the best cities to live at for Tech workers. Very liberal, because of UT. A little chunk of San Fran in the middle of Texas. I would love to live there if I get a job there.

Assuming you’ve visited? What’s your thoughts? Always like to compare first impressions with other folks. I’ve been there many times. Cool city. But I could never see myself living there. If your TC is hovering around 200k, you’ll live very well.

It’s ‘weird’ - a liberal island in Texas...

There is SXSW saying ‘Welcome to Austin, Don’t move here’.. ppl here really don’t want anyone moving to Austin especially from California.. which is true in a way Californians moving here have just messed up the housing market since they drool over big homes & low prices...which has irked the locals all the more.. why do you Real wanna move here anyways , it’s an unpredictable weather , super hot summer, bad traffic ,any direction you drive it takes about 8hrs just to get out of Texas, closest snow place is 10hrs away, beaches are muddied... not many job opportunities it’s just a hype... please stay where you are don’t move
