What do you think?

So they pay you 100k more, and you wouldn't move lol. I would🤔

I am thinking in terms of increase in savings taking cost of living into account. It doesn’t map 1:1 like that

Seattle is not twice as expensive as Austin.

T-Mobile yeeeeeeeet Aug 6, 2019

But you have to live in Seattle... depending on where you are in your life it might not be a good move. If you’re older and have a family Seattle is a great place to be, if you’re young/in your 20’s I wouldn’t recommend it.

Cisco stoked Aug 6, 2019

You couldn’t be more wrong. Tons of 20 y/o here and this city is the next Silicon Valley. Every major tech player is developing like crazy here. Want a SV salary with no income tax? Come here.

If you're moving from Austin, wouldn't Seattle be better for the younger crowd?

If you plan to get a house in Seattle then it’s very expensive. You can buy bigger and better house in Austin with less $.

American Express QBDK33 OP Aug 6, 2019

Buying a house is not a priority.

What the earlier poster said... if you want an exciting social life and are single (and looking to mingle) - Seattle isn’t for you. If you’re older and live a quieter life - then Seattle can be serene. There’s no gentle way to put this... the “Seattle Freeze” is very real (google it), and girls in Seattle (and this is charitable) are not attractive.

American Express QBDK33 OP Aug 6, 2019

Thanks for the input. The question is mainly to compare tc and savings based on COL.

Microsoft megamanX Aug 6, 2019

If that’s the case then it’s a no brainer

Yes, I would Figure 196k is taxable(assuming use max out 401k) Rough estimate is 33% in taxes leaves you with 131k or 11k a month 4-5k a month to live off leaves you with 72-84k , or 6-7k a month You should be able to save what you net at 122k, or something close to it

Microsoft leetlleet Aug 6, 2019

Washington state doesn’t have income tax

Fred Hutch wccs05 Aug 6, 2019

To be fair, neither does Texas. Just sayin'

Lived in Austin for many years. Love it but It’s so miserably hot. I would love to live in the Pacific Northwest. What an amazing part of the country especially with that massive of a salary difference, I would jump at the opportunity. You can always enjoy a great life experience then move back to Austin later. You’re so close to Canada too for travel. That whole region is one of the most beautiful in the nation. Especially Vancouver and Whistler.

Google m6r4 Aug 6, 2019

Financially that would definitely worth it if you are single. The only case I could see it not being worth it is if you needed a large house for your family. That said, you may be able to get the same Amazon job in Austin...

Purely from a financial perspective, hell yes take the Seattle offer. Lifestyle-wise though, the two are very different. There's so much to love about living in the PNW, but the very short daylight hours of the winter months are difficult for some. Cost of housing is also significantly higher in Seattle
