Austin v. Seattle

What's the cost of living like in Austin vs Seattle? Apart from Austin being in Texas, it looks like a really cool town.

If your in Seattle you should really stay there . You would not like Texas at all . Seriously

Austin is a fantastic town. The people are great and there is lots to do in the city. That said, it is like an island of awesomeness in a sea of prairie. San Marcos , New Braunfels, and the Hill Country are nice day trips. Other than that, Texas is dull and boring. Seattle has horrible winter weather, and the people are an island of passive aggressive sterility, surrounded by fantastic natural treasures.

Yeah it is fucking terrible here in Austin. Stay the fuck away

Microsoft Lotl Apr 4, 2018

Biggest takeaway from that article is poor mass transit and high rents downtown, iMHo.

Why don't you go back to California if you hate Texas this much

As someone who recently relocated in the other direction, overall there's definitely pros and cons to both cities but overall they're pretty similar. As far as cost of living goes, you've got way more options for houses in Austin. You can live less than a half hour from downtown and buy a nice 2000 sqft house for $200-300k easily, or you can choose to live closer and pay more. Groceries and general expenses seem to be slightly lower, but it's not a massive difference.

Been in both places. Rent in Austin is becoming similar to Seattle (2k if you choose to live downtown for a 1bd apartment). You can get higher pay more easily in Seattle because of the large corp hq there. Austin have high cedar count meaning that if you have allergies you will not like it here unless you take allergy pills or take shots. Seattle is more diverse. You can live without a car in Seattle, harder in Austin.

Good info on the allergies!

If you want to buy a house and settle down, Austin wins hands down. You could get 2.5k sq ft house less than 400k in a really good school district not more than 30 mins from downtown and very close to major software companies. If u r working for AMZN it is located in northern part of Austin and the suburbs are pretty close by, where you can get really good house for a reasonable price. But if you want to live the hippy lifestyle and stay near downtown, yes it is pricey to rent or buy. Depends on your lifestyle, future personal and career goals. On the whole, Austin is a f'king awesome place to live in.

Austin is a nice town, for lakes, hills, and tons of bars clubs downtown. Weather is hot but its dry, not humid.

Dell robr Apr 14, 2018

It's humid as hell. Maybe not as humid as Houston, but far more humid than most cities.

I’m checking out Austin, what’s up with property taxes they almost make it look like you’re renting a place you own.

Amazon Nbvcde Apr 14, 2018

They call it Robbin Hood

Oracle druh kram Apr 14, 2018

Agreed. In good neighborhoods u might end up spending almost 10k or more per year in property taxes

Amazon wwqwwq Apr 14, 2018

That's the same with Texas, low house prices but high property tax

Seattle is depressing as fuck...
