Who has lived/worked in both places? Pros and cons? What would you miss about bay area/California? How are opportunities in Austin in hardware? Anyone in Intel Austin? Edit: how's Intel Austin campus?
I lived and worked in Bay Area as well as Austin. Texas actually sucks a lot. Less pay and less saving. No fun to travel new exciting places compared to Bay Area. Less companies in Texas for hardware. Bad weather at Texas.
So by your logical statement, Texas is expensive?
Your going to get really biased comments on Blind since the majority of people on here is in California. That being said, only a handful of companies in Texas pay pretty good and if you don’t get into one of them don’t bother coming over.
Lived in both. If you're young/single go to bay area to maximize learning/TC/savings. Married/settling down/not chasing TC/growth, go Austin. Weather, allergies and proximity to nothing is what made me leave Austin.
The pay difference from Austin to BA is much more for SW than HW. (Mostly because HW pays low regardless of where you are) For your example, intel pays only 13% more if you relocate from Austin to BA. Obviously it also depends on many subjective things like weather, buying a home vs renting an apartment. I would prefer Austin if working for intel.
Say, moving from Cali to Austin. Is that a move worth making? For someone who is single, relatively young. Are there options in Austin? What would you miss about Cali?
Austin is as fun as SF (the city; not the shit hole Bay area...The only reason you wouldnt love Austin is the 4-month 100+ degrees heat. Not a showstopper though
Sure go ahead to Austin if hangout for you means a couple blocks in downtown and you dont mind paying $100 per month for water ( have paid that for 8 months). The only good thing about Austin is chicks in UT.
Aaaaah the chicks...you dont have that in bay area for sure!!!
I’ve lived in both and I currently live in Austin. I hated San Brose. The traffic. The constant crowds everywhere. The work 24/7 lifestyle. Intel only pays a 12% bump out there, so you will not save as much. When you go out to clubs in the South Bay Area there are generally only guys there. Honestly, most clubs I went to there had a line to the guys restroom...not the girls lol. I love Austin. I enjoy doing things outside. I love my 3100 soft new house at half the cost it would be in the bay. I have a big backyard. I save most of my salary (thanks to the move my husband and I plan to retire early). The people are sooo much friendlier than in the bay too. It’s a lot easier to make friends out here. No state income tax in Austin. I woke up early at 6:30AM this last summer and ran/walked a 5k just about everyday. The heat is not that bad. So clearly I like Austin better, but to each is their own. I’m 26 years old btw. Combined TC 330k
👆🏼
Austin traffic is as bad as in LA now.
The only thing i miss here is the redwood forest...we dont have “forests” here...the rest of all the good things you can find in Austin. Remember everything is bigger in texas, things get done here, people are nicer and nobody gives a dang about your political view (unless you go to a random ranch 150 miles out of Austin with a fu$k trump tshirt). If you are fan of the startupgrind (making psychos richer while you work 24/7), being stuck in 101, indian/chinese monoculture and masses everywhere, mostly shitty weather in SF, 99-1 ratio of bros to ladies...then stay in Norcal
Austin is much more livable than the bay
Texas sucks.
