At azure for couple of years now and pushing for in band promotion. Last year, My manager asked me to produce more documentation to prove my work. So I have written papers on my projects etc., Recently, I am told that only way to be considered for promotion is to present it in a forum with bunch of folks that are not impacted by my work. I am told that it will be easy to convince other managers if I do these presentations. I come from another FANG company where the internal presentation culture is not as predominant expect for product or feature launches. Is this the only way to move up in Compute?
" I am told that it will be easy to convince other managers if I do these presentations. " if you heard this, you should realize it's time to jump off
Are there any companies where people can just focus on doing their work rather than presenting it to people who are not involved in order to convince everyone you’re doing cool things? I’m experiencing something similar at DocuSign. I’m not down with this culture, and it’s seriously making me consider jumping ship because I don’t see this changing anytime soon.
I am sure there are companies and teams that is able to evaluate you outside of these channels. I think it is specific group and managers that build this culture. Managers that struggle understanding your work build this culture. But I know what you mean, I feel like I am contesting in some election to support this democratic process of throwing opinions on work.
It’s superficial and distracting to me personally. I’m sure some people thrive on this, but yeah, I feel you. I might just be on the wrong team.
find a team/company that fits in your work style. don't force on things, work is a relationship, aka. two way street. it's going to work either you or your other half to be something else.
What level are you? TC?
The forum thing seems excessive unless you're already L63 or above. What's your level? Also, TC or GTFO
I usually feel this is common approach by mgmnt to not say a direct no to you, if you share good relations with them. If they can’t see your worth, go somewhere your hard work is appreciated n they encourage you to work hard on projects instead of marketing yourself
Save yourself time preparing document and invest on yourself / seek better opportunities
💯
I was in a similar situation at my previous company. I order to go from systems engineer to senior systems engineer, they wanted me to do workshops and training presentations on how you can use the power platform. Even though I automated a bunch of shit with 500k plus ROI. Ended up leaving.
Yes, you need visibility and stamp across team/org. Otherwise, everyone can claim that they are operating at Principal level
Thanks BlueSmith , DM’ing you
