Need advice to switch career from Goldman Sachs

Hi blind people, Only one word to say to you. You guys rock πŸ‘ŠπŸ‘Š Keep this community going with awesome answers and sharing loads of experiences. Bit long post. Will take 2-3 mins :) I have just completed 2 years in Goldman Sachs. Seriously need to change things as work is not interesting anymore and neither is the environment challenging. Some things about me - YOE - 2 Based in Bengaluru currently From Tier 1 college Current TC - 36 LPA(expected as GS gives variable bonuses) Pretty comfortable in algorithmic programming. But have no experience of sys design : I have certain questions - 1 - I am in constant dilemma of thinking of offshore options like Europe etc. or be in India. One thing I know for certain is that I want to settle down in India. Can someone from their experience help me with this? I feel both options have pros and cons but not able to settle on one. (Though in these times, I guess offshore option will be off mostly) 2 - Should I look to join Google, Amazon (these are the only FAANG options here in Bengaluru ) or aim for some cool looking startups like Rippling etc. Comp wise i guess both will offer more or less same but need guidance about career growth and learnings. 3 - When do you guys think that openings in Google, LinkedIn etc. will appear again? Should i wait for that or try to join some other companies in meantime? I need a change asap :) 4 - How i will be seen by recruiters given the fact that I am working in GS not a outright tech company? 5 - What TC should be ideal for me aim for? I want a number which is realistic. 6 - Some other cool companies which are currently hiring at my level and worth joining in? Thanks a lot for going through the post and hoping to get lots of suggestions :) #engineering #software #swe

Stop obsessing about FAANG in India ,there are hell lot of companies in India paying a lot better than them and also good work . You are still in early stage of your careers, explore in other opportunities as well ,Faang isn't going anywhere ,you can try for them for experienced roles in future where the pay is actually good which isn't true for junior roles . I had an offer from one of the FAANG straight out of college , and from a Hedge fund( TC was 2x of FAANG) as well,Chose the latter one which is paying me similar to sde2 in those FAANG ,learning a lot as well. Will definitely apply in future to those orgs, but for now the brand is not worth it .

With your YOE you can target 40-45 .

Thanks for valuable inputs. I am not really into FAANG as such but given the lack of solid options (more like unaware of), they just come up as the first thing to look out for. It's great to hear that you took Hedge fund route and doing well. So, what is your work like in Hedge Funds as far as tech is concerned?? Isn't it only serving business oriented? Or there are real challenging tech things which you guys work on day to day basis?

1. Try Google. Amazon is not that good as per my experience. 2. You can aim for Europe / Singapore. Companies like facebook, grab hire from India. 3. GS is a very good brand & the recruiter will not ignore you seeing GS brand(except Google India - didn't receive any call till now) 4. The current scenario is not good for switching. I will suggest u wait for more 6 months & you have a good reason as well. Do you mind sharing ur patc & base hike for the last 2 years in GS? Thanks in advance!!

Why leaving GS straight out ? Check out internal mobility first maybe. It’s a big firm with lots of opportunities and very different teams.
