Is TC chasing bad on the long term. If you switch job every 1-2 years how are you building experience and earn trust to go to next level.

So in the long term is TC chasing bad in the long term when it comes to total compensation at the end of your career?

  • To get to next level, you just solve more leetcode and learn system design in depth. Technically the work you do is meaningless

This attitude is why software is garbage. I sympathize with it, believe me! But it explains it.

  • This works in your 20s, but you reach a point where there isnt an easy ‘next jump’. IE- TC plateau’s and you are going to need to stay longer to get a promo/responsibility that takes you to the next level. Mattering on company size this is typically at the Director or VP levels. It is hard to jump jobs into those titles….

  • it depends on where your job market is located and what your area of specialty is. Over the long term, networking relationships are important to maintain which means you need more than a year to even be memorable. If you want to work at large non-tech corporations, you might have trouble getting an interview because jumping 1-2 years is considered unstable. If you’re working in startups, burn and churn is expected and anything over a year is usually acceptable. But eventually you’ll get tired of moving around and then you’ll need to stay someplace a longer time

  • I try to work on meaningful work and ramp up fast. I don’t necessarily think job hopping is any worse, considering that people generally do not get promoted for their technical expertise and instead are promoted for things like scope/impact (I.e as a data engineer, I have a better chance learning how to be a better data engineer by building a complicated data pipeline, but I would have a better chance getting promoted if I made a chat app that the whole company used)
