Would you give up wlb for 30% salary hike

Dec 15, 2019 432 Comments

Currently at microsoft with tc: 150k (level 61). I work at max 20 hours week. Love my team, manager and work. Only worked for this team since graduation

Amazon is offering me 30% hike at sde2 but the hiring manager said the wlb is not the most relaxed.

Wondering if it’s worth taking the hike? I am having conflicting thoughts like “I should be aggressive in career at least right now when I am young” vs “enjoy the lifestyle current job is providing because the money is not very bad.”

Thoughts? M, 25 and on a visa.

Definitely no, I joined amazon and gave up perks and wlb. I’m 6 months in looking for another job.

Many people assume that when people say Amazon is cutthroat it means they can work hard and succeed. Its the politics and backstabbing that drains your soul. Speaking from experience. Ex-amazon, pleasantly surprised by how awesome people at Google are!

Don't do it. If the HM is telling you WLB sucks, it's going to be worse than you think.

Just stay. Don’t waste all the free time you have and leetcode more, learn system design, be very prepared for interviews. When you have 4-5 years of tenure, try senior roles externally and get 300k TC or more in a top tier company. Amazon is not really worth it.

This! Amazon sucks and will squeeze you to the point of causing health challenges. Is 30% more going to benefit you in any tangible way? Will it be worth it to sacrifice your health and well being over it?

Only working 20 hours a week and coasting is how you wake up one day at 40, unemployable, with no skills anybody cares about.

Have you gone back to MSFT with this offer in hand and asked if there is anything they can do to match (or at least get you closer)? No reason this needs to be a pure trade off as MSFT may be willing to increase your comp (even if it's not for the full 30%).

If you're working 20 hours a week and still have no skills then something is wrong.
