Currently a DE at Amazon. 5 YOE, 3 as a DE. Always been in tech. Offer 1: Top 3 bank (GS/JPM/MS) - Data Engineer - Marketing Analytics. Using Python/Spark/Hadoop/SQL. Associate level. Offer 2: Google - Pipeline Analyst (Business Analyst job family) - Google Cloud. Seems like a lot of Excel and SQL work. They didnt tell me the level but it sounds like a ‘Senior BA’ role based on salary. Comp is roughly equal so not a factor here. I have contacts at Apple, Facebook, HFs etc all who said to just reach out when ready to do the coding interviews and they will interview. For this I need a less toxic and stressful environment first so I can prepare on the side. I also know a recruiter at Google who said he can interview me for SWE roles - but my algorithms/Python needs more work so I need time first. Which offer would you take?
TC in GBP is still useful for some ppl. So TC or gtfo (bis)
You heard them, OP.
TC is 80k (am taking a pay cut from Amazon).
That’s pretty low. What level are you at Amzn?
5. Other companies like Salesforce etc I was going to interview at was even lower. The ‘top level’ for a DE at my level seems to be 70k GBP + 10% bonus. If you look at Glassdoor for SWEs, the salary doesn’t even seem to be that off those numbers (assuming DE is less than SWE).
I would LC and interview for tech roles in tech companies. WLB in banking sucks and no point on going to goog etc if not tech
Yes but getting prepared will take time. Mainly need something in the interim given I need to support myself financially. I guess sticking to a DE role is better in this case since it’s still Engineering? WLB in the bank team is very good as it’s not front office and not a sweatshop bank.
As an update, I took Google, will move internally after 1 year and by then LC will be solid and I’ll be in a better spot. :)
What was the TC breakdown that you received from Google?
And congrats!!
TC or gtfo
It is in GBP, so peanuts tbh.
