Folks, are you rethinking switching jobs doe to uncertain market in near future with fed tapering, rate hike and recession and layoff fears? Yield curve flattening too.
It's just that due to lifo and new employees having less value, easier target for layoff.
Ate you taking into account if manager or leadership is in same office? Are you taking into account being remote?

How much of the economic situation is going to actually impact tech?

Stock market has become a poor indicator of overall market health. We’re just seeing all this volatility because of how governments handled covid.

Think longer term, at least 2-3 years from now.

I think you are safest if you are valuable. Usually managers or directors just habe to pick names and you just gotta hope your name is not on list

That’s the unfortunate reality in corporate America. They make managers fire a bunch of people and then the manager gets fired.

There’s also a level of competence required to determine whether someone is valuable. You can easily be “wrongly” let go and it can take the company months to realize how important you actually were.

Safest thing to do is to sharpen your skills, keep applying to jobs, and push yourself to become better everyday. It’s not fun, but until the effort:reward ratio isn’t favorable, best to keep playing the game.

  • A company with strong fundamentals shouldn’t have to worry about stock drops, right?

    Like Twilio, Snowflake, etc

I think if overall market tanks and everyone is conducting layoffs, even if your business is doing okay , layoffs will hit.

My thinking is to go by probability. Lowest probability of being impacted is if you are a strong valuable member in your org.
