Notice how this place is full of PIPed Amazon LEs but not much from FB or Netflix
Even though Netflix openly declares that being “good” will lead to a “generous severance package” and Facebook fires anyone who doesn’t keep getting promoted in time, these companies aren’t trashed here like Amazon is?
Why? I think I know the answer. Amazon is willing to give a lot more new grads and “good” engineers a chance and promptly PIPs anyone who isn’t performing. All those PIPed engineers then come here and talk about how they definitely are all top performers who got screwed by their 😈 manager.
Netflix and Facebook on the other hand won’t give these “ok” engineers a chance at all. At least those PIPed now have a chance at Facebook because of their Amazon tenure.
The “Amazon PIP culture” you fear is everywhere in this industry. It just manifests differently and impacts different groups of people. Imagine thinking that working at Netflix or Facebook means you “safe” from PIP. Jesus 😂🤣

But please note that new grads or internally promoted L5 or L6 are the ones upset about the broken comp philosophy and they are the ones ranting.
PIP is not really something people worry about here. People at Amazon are pissed that you coming from Nokia and are making 300k+ while they are getting paid 🥜🥜🥜
Seriously, Netflix’s severance package is amazing. And you know exactly what you’re getting into from day 1, it’s in the culture deck.
Amazon, well…not so much. Blinders know about URA targets but tons of SWEs worldwide don’t read the news or want to get into Amazon just as a stepping stone to other companies.
