I have been working as a business intelligence engineer for 5 years. The job duties are more related with Microsoft BI stack tools, Tableau and other traditional database development like Oracle. There was a day, after I attended a data scientist seminar, I found my new career goal which is to become a data scientist. I started learning python, R, programming algorithm since one year ago and also learning some online courses that related with data science by self. I am also enrolling a master program in Analytics, hopefully to graduate in 2019. Recently I am trying to apply for a few data scientist roles. But none of them have any feedback which means my I am rejected at the resume step. Can anyone gives some suggestion? I think because my current work experience has nothing related with data science. Would you suggest I apply for a data scientist role as an new grads? Do I also need to included my previous experience? Any suggestion and advise is appreciated. Thank you!
Getting into DS can be tricky you could start with a more junior position for 1 year then switch jobs to get appropriate level. Startups will like your self starter attitude and will actually appreciate your ability to produce an occasional dashboard which typical CS/phys data scientist usually suck at.
Getting into a startup is a good idea. Thank you!
Work on your Kaggle skills and post your profile on GitHub . Can you whiteboard gradient descent , Backprop etc, can you explain bagging / boosting ?go to odsc and see what skills you have and what is the gap.
Does the interviewer really care about the Kaggle? I learn from other DS’s solution from Kaggle but have not yet work on a project by self. I think I can whiteboard two of your mentioned points. Will definitely check ODSC. Thank you for your advice.
