Most realistic outcome if work visas discontinued?

What do you think will be the most realistic outcome, if, say all work visas were suddenly discontinued tomorrow (hypothetically - this isn't a thread to debate about whether this can/will happen or not). #workvisa #h1b #rfe

Definitely not “replace visa workers with Americans”. This is a meritocracy we will not lower the bar to someone subpar just because they’re American.
This is horrible for tech - way more outsourcing and they’re gonna start realizing our TCs are not worth and someone in China/India can do it for so much cheaper

Credit Karma, in a way this proves the point that people are making. That the US government can change the rules when they want and how they want, and that is exactly what they are doing.

    • Credit karma this reply didn't age well, they changed the rules on minimum wage and speciality occupation. Now more than 80% of H1Bs are screwed.

There’s really no need for the vast majority of H1Bs in tech when you can get code bootcamp graduates who are already in country, you can train them per your company standards, they tend to accept lower pay just to have a job, and you don’t have to pay visa or relocation fees. Most of my bootcamp graduates are underrepresented people who didn’t have the means to pay for college. So it solves a social justice problem at the same time. Time for companies to get real about their social justice pandering and provide economic opportunity where it’s needed. And that means, less reliance on H1B.

@three6 - Why is your CEO an ex H1-B holder and not a bootcamp graduate?

I mean I can appreciate the racist call-out. I did a quick Google search to check my privilege, hoping that code bootcamps are helping minorities in a big way. According to my search, 70% of bootcamp graduates are white. Let me know if I'm wrong. I hope you're not insinuating I'm racist against white people 😂💀😂

  • I’m very excited for Canadian tech. It’s not good for high paying tech jobs to be concentrated in a few cities in one or two countries.

SWE wages would go up. Some jobs will move to other countries. Some visa workers will be replaced by Americans.
