Hey Blinders! I have 2 offers from BNY Mellon and Verizon Media. BNY Mellon: Infrastructure automation Verizon Media: Backend dev + some infrastructure Exact same TC. Both remote for now.
Never. Work. At. A. Bank. As. SWE.
mind elaborating on that?
Capital one and goldman sachs are pretty good places to work at imo. Much better than Verizon media.
Fwiw, there's a hiring freeze in VzM. The only openings are in roles considered critical. Namely, your surely be in a high impact position. That's always a good thing.
BNY treats me good.
Hi there.... Can't talk about the it side but bank treats me good....great WLB
I’m in one of the more tech-focused teams in BNYM and looking to switch because of how the vast majority of people operate in my team: no clean code, no tests, no idea how to write tests, no logical thinking when writing code mostly just blind copy-pasting, no proper CI. Mostly low quality contractors (allegedly seniors), and mgmt just lets them deliver the mentioned quality without the willingness to improve their output. It does not matter if you have 3 perms focusing on quality while having 9 contractors not giving a crap - and having no control over it. On the other hand, I also see: good quality coming out from lots of other teams, centralized aim on proper CI, cloud, good technology stack (compared to banks in general). It really depends on the team and by now you should have some idea about your future team. My take is that teams that are built from the new hiring waves (~last 1y) are relatively safe choice.
VzM is a sinking ship. Do your due diligence before joining. Good compensation and perks, but long term strategy and vision is a question mark. Expect more BUs to be sold off like Huffington Post etc.
I personally like working at VZM a lot. Good perks, good tech stack, I learn a lot and have high impact.
