Fake an Offer

Ok this post is not about the *obvious* moral questions. Just curious if anyone has done it or thinks it would work because I’m struggling to figure out how they would know.

Let’s say you get an offer from Company A. You say you have an offer from Company B with a TC higher than what Company A offered to see if they will bring up their offer. Reality is you don’t have an offer from Company B. Would A ever ask to see the offer? Check with Company B? Again morally not great, just asking about mechanics here.

Be careful some companies ask for proof. In my experience Amazon didn’t but Salesforce and Google did. You can obviously play it off by saying its a verbal offer but then these companies wont be able to counter without proof

Ah nice loophole on the verbal offer. Lowers the risk. Based on the poll it looks like this is more common than I thought. Lol

Do you think companies have “morals” when the lowball you and don’t offer market rate?

    • Right. I'm not advocating for lying, but in a context of the OP question, the discussion is really about whether you understand the comp structure and how one negotiates. It's possible without ever providing any proof.

I’ve been in situations where Company A has asked to see the other offer.

I wonder how they would respond to just a simple “I’m not comfortable disclosing the actual offer” interesting though I didn’t think they would have the nerve to ask.

In any case a written offer is confidential. Says so on the contract too.

The chance you get caught is low. But if you do somehow get caught you’ll likely be blacklisted. Is it worth it? That’s up to you.

I think it’s uncertain if they will ask for proof or not so you have to assess the risk
