Hi everyone,

I have an offer from Amazon for a great team and want to understand baby planning and maternity leaves.
My career at Apple is kind of on a standstill so I want to make this move, also Apple has great parental leaves so want to consider everything before I take the offer.

1. Leaves:
For Parental Leave one must also have one continuous year of employment at time of birth or adoption to be eligible. We plan to have a baby by March/April next year, close to my one year mark at Amazon.

2. Financial:
RSU vesting will suspend after 14 days cumulative after leave and resume upon return to work with an adjusted vest schedule. Your updated vesting schedule may take up to four weeks to appear in your Morgan Stanley account.
- What's the impact on joining bonus? (first year & second year)
- How to determine the updated vesting schedule?

Is there anything that new parents at Amazon would like to share with me?
Anything that I should consider before signing the offer?

  • I would suggest you to spend sometime going through previous threads on this topic. You really don’t want any stress during pregnancy (it doesn’t matter if your are not carrying the baby, stress does have an affect on everyone in the family). Your career growth is much less important than a healthy baby. Also once you have baby you are not done, good care in the early childhood is more important.

    1. Yes its 1 year policy but this should be fine. If you havw good term with your manager there would be no issues.
    2. Amazon recently changed this and now no more suspension of rsu vesting during maternity/paternity leave. However double confirm on this with your manager in case if its diff rule for new joiner.

Amazon ramp up is crazy, so it might be challenging during pregnancy (taking leaves because you might not feel well / doctor visits).

Expectations - the long hours, the amount of work needed to be done. I'm not a mother so I can't be sure of the toil pregnancy takes on a person, but it gets pretty crazy with Amazon work. Most folks work weekends. You can get PIP-ed within 4 months of joining if your performance is not up to the mark. Imagine dealing with that kind of stress

Short-tenured Amazonians have high chances of getting PIPd if they are vocal about maternity plans. Sad but Amazon is called evil for a reason.

They recently changed the vesting delay, so the 6 week parental leave after one year no longer delays vests, your prorated sign on bonus will also continue to be paid. Also you still get 12 or so weeks of maternity leave (between pre and post partum and vest delaying never happened for this period) the additional 6 weeks is for having a year of tenure.
