Is the 21st century the India century
Currently at Google. L4 TC 240K in MTV. Was 2 years at Amazon previously. Now 2 at G. Got Amazon SDE2 offer with 288K total comp in Seattle. I was adamant on the comp and recruiter made it happen after talking to hm/director (I don't know). I think it's a very strong offer, almost SDE3 comp. Equal to about 330-340k in MTV, which is L5 comp at Google. I looked at internal comp spreadsheet at G. 300-320 is the comp for L5s with my YOE. There are some with 380ish but those should have been L6 to begin with. Usually I see out of band comps for downlevelled folks. 4 YOE. Would you suggest to take the offer?
Good offer, but Amazon is a down grade. You'll probably miss some nice perks and the monthly vesting schedule
just 2 more years of monthly vesting left. Refreshers are not that big at L4 to vest monthly. Plus, I already have G on my Resume.
I agree that A is a downgrade at this stage. With A and G on your resume why be yet another brick in the wall? Why not seek out something new, something crazy?
Hang on there for 2 more years and then try Amazon L6.
Why? That's almost L6 comp I'm getting. Base is already at cap.
L5 at Amazon is heavily abused position. Your offer is bottom of L6. You’ll probably be receiving BS feedback on your work by some internally promoted recent L6s who will be way less qualified than you (and probably be earning lower TC). You won’t like it for long. You won’t get anywhere from there. Even if you get promoted your new L6 comp will be same. So, you won’t see much TC increase in 5 years unless AMZN stock doubles or triples like the past. On the other hand you can probably get E5 at FB in 1 year ict4 at Apple right now with very good refreshers which can hit 400k in couple of years. Joining L6 at Amazon will get you 320-350k in Seattle with more higher ceiling and much more pleasant experience.
Is that 288k accounting for only 5% stocks in first year? If yes, I can see it only going up in later years, no? Sounds like a good deal then. If not, how’s it working out per year for next 2-3 years?
That's a pretty insane comp increase factoring in the CoL difference. I definitely wouldn't be able to turn it down, especially at 4 YOE. Can always leave for someone willing to match that comp after a year or two back at amazon.
I was thinking FB after 3-4 years.
Don't do it man. Stay. Or try FB if you really want a high comp
Internal comp. spreadsheet. Tell me more!
nothing to tell really. People can willingly share salaries there.
I still can't believe I am earning more than an L4 SWE @ Google.
Your role and level?
I know the comp philosophy at Amazon. Either they downlevelled you like crazy or you're lying. SDE2 band goes from 180k (on promo) to 260k (top of the band, usually downlevel folks). And stock hasn't grown that much since past 1 year, so that's out of the picture. G has so many benefits, like full 401k match, free food, gym, subsidized personal trainers, etc. Consider cost of all this after tax. Your lifestyle might not include all that, but mine definitely does and I have to factor that in. I fall in newly promo-ed category. So would have been at 180k at Amazon. But they give you 15% base increase for Bay, so 198k. There will be a downlevelled L4 at G earning 320 or so.
I make 230k at goog 2 years of experience L4. The refresh/raises here are big, why would you leave for such a small %increase. I wouldn't leave for <350k (including sign on and stuff). My TC has increased by 40k each of the past two years (and probably same this year since I'm bottom of L4 band now). You're probably in a similar situation wrt raises. Cliff won't happen for another couple years (and won't be bad cliff since I had small initial grant), and I'll evaluate then.
Did you enjoy your time at Amazon?
Yes. It's not for the weak hearted definitely.
Then take the offer. You can wait 2+ years at G hoping you get to this TC (a big if) or you can make it happen now if that’s what you’re looking for.
