Hello everyone, I would like to ask for feedback on my internship, to see if what I’ve experienced is common, bad luck, or just my fault.

I’ve been an SDE intern in Operations for a few months (not in the US).

After the first few weeks of onboarding and minor tasks, I didn’t have any project assigned, despite repatedly asking for it for a good month. Since, my work has mainly revolved around a multitude of various (and unrelated) small tasks/bug fixes, which were honestly underwhelming to say the least and assigned by senior colleagues.

So I thought that probably I was just bad, and they didnt want to assign me any bigger/more interesting stuff. But during our very rare 1:1s it seemed my manager was satisfied and also wanted to extend a full time offer.

And yes, 1:1s have been like 10-15 minutes every month, mostly because my manager kept forgetting/was busy. I honestly don’t know how common they are supposed to be, I only know that my other friends (not in software) were having 1 hour every week.
I kept reminding about our meetings, but in the end I, if he was forgetting about them, I suppose it was because he didn’t have anything constructive or important to say, or didn’t care.

Honestly, this internship just made me hate software engineering.

Is this a common theme for internships at Amazon? Did I have unreasonable expectations? Did I need to do anything differently?

Thank you

  • Sounds like being unlucky with a bad manager/project combo. I've been there. I wouldn't worry about it for future internships. Your team matters a lot.
