Bay Area homeowners - do you worry about climate change?

Jul 11, 2021 25 Comments

We are now in the biggest drought of the last 100 years, and expecting a horrible fire season. If the planet keeps warming, we may see the Bay Area becoming increasingly water scarce, and prone to long fire seasons with the possibility that your home will be impacted. Even otherwise, the air quality may be poor for several months in a year. Do you worry about these things, and do you have a timeframe in mind for selling your home?

If not, why?

There were only three days of actual unhealthy air last year.

I don’t worry about it at all.

Yea, but the worst of climate change isn’t even upon us yet. Have you been thinking about what it will be like 10-15 year from now or is your time horizon for being here shorter?

This is still a bit of a cop out though. It’s not so bad now, but a decade or so down the line? Are you worried about that or climate change in general?

Lol what a conspiracy theory, climate change is dangerous to the whole world, nothing specific to bay area. And such fears won't crash the housing market if you are waiting for it 😜

When I was buying a home here 4 years back, so many friends were trying to frighten me by saying, this is earthquake zone don't buy, lmao!

Some areas are more vulnerable to it than others. You are probably going to be better off in the American Midwest than in the Bahamas for example.

This is all a common sense, not really serious enough to instill any fear into home owners or buyers. You are thinking too much for the hope.

  • There are many things climate change has caused but forest fires in this region isn’t one of them. Forest fires have been occurring here (and all over the planet) before humans started burning fossils. Native plants and species here are remarkably adapted to forest fires. Ex: Redwood trees. In fact, it is the human habitation that is delaying the frequency of forest fires thereby making each occurrence worse than normally it would be.

This is a good point. Considering human habitation will continue in this area, what do you think the future will look like in terms of forest fires?

The other contributing factor is continuing droughts which dry our vegetation and create more fuel for fires. I expect this to continue in the future

    • We (or next gen) will find a way to contain the fire and live with air purifiers for few days/week in a year. Other places would still be worse than Bay Area. Good luck in controlling tornadoes, heat wave, hurricanes or flooding.

  • Very worried about climate change which is why I'm buying more bay area propety given the mild climate. Much of the country is literally on fire or over 100 degrees. Its mid 70s today in the bay proper.

Fires in Ca have little correlation with climate change, and a lot more with governance. There is a reason why we don’t call it global warming any longer lol
