Zappos is the only BIG-ish company there. I like the idea though. No state tax. And it costs 65 percent less to live in Vegas than in San Fran (This is what zappos tells everyone in there interviews..)

I could probably become EM in some no name company in Vegas and live happily ever after?

Amazon zgsm23 Dec 25, 2019

You could! I would say go hell for leather and recruit for Zappos. It's not that difficult to get a gig at Zappos.

Why Vegas?

Facebook jasonFeng OP Dec 25, 2019

Low COL. Nice suburbs and schools for the kids.

Airbnb wise taco Dec 25, 2019

Sure but you can get that in dozens of places, right? Why do you like Vegas the most?

Consider Phoenix. Same climate, more opportunities (at least in comparison - nowhere near tech city hub opportunities, however).

Was gonna say this. We have Amazon, PayPal, Intel and GoDaddy, plus Microsoft, but I'm pretty sure MS doesn't hire for SWEs here (correct me if I'm wrong, and if so, sign me up!). Plus a lot of smaller companies and finance companies, like Amex, USAA, Wells Fargo, etc. that pay decently. You can buy a 3000+ sq ft house in a nice neighborhood here for ~$400k, less depending on the city.

Addiction to gambling is a possibility at which point you will think 65% expensive in SF was better.

You can live in Vegas and not pass through the strip at all. That’s actually what most people do in the Vegas/ Henderson area

Facebook jasonFeng OP Dec 25, 2019

I’ve never drank more than a glass of alcohol in my life, you think I’ll get addicted to gambling?

Consider Seattle

Facebook jasonFeng OP Dec 25, 2019

Same COL, same shit traffic, and far worse weather.

Redfin y0lo3 Dec 25, 2019

COL in Seattle is probably 60-75%..

Interest rates are low. I wouldn’t buy cash. Do you have enough swing for Facebook to let you work remote? Now that would be a win. You would keep your SF TC but live in Vegas.

Do you have a daughter? If yes, then don't do it 🤣🤣

Austin? (Though doesnt help on the Tahoe front)

Intel Alt-Tab Dec 25, 2019

Why do you need to live in Vegas to get to Tahoe more easily?

Facebook YmRA88 Dec 25, 2019

Moved from Vegas to the Bay Area and miss living in a 5 bedroom house. Yes, my daughters were fine out there. No, I didn’t develop a gambling habit. In comparison, very little opportunity for tech (hence, the reason I moved). And choices are slim if you’re looking for a good public education system, but it does exist. Otherwise, there are some great places out there to raise families - Henderson/Summerlin.
