How do they compare? If my TC is 160k in NYC. How much should it be in SF for the same lifestyle?
Pay band is the same for companies in locations with both. NYC has more non-tech companies (except some specific finance companies), and they pay less than tech companies, but tech company offices in both locations pay the same. How much you need for the lifestyle you want is mostly personal. Both are comparably expensive but NYC gets cheaper faster as you get further from the core of Manhattan, especially since you don't need a car.
On average, it’s around the same. I would say that living in Manhattan allows a more lucrative lifestyle than living in San Francisco, and can thus be more expensive; whereas living in the greater Bay Area (e.g. Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Mountain View) on average is more expensive than living in the greater New York City area (e.g. Jersey City, Queens, Brooklyn).
You get paid the same. But if you are willing to take a train out for 30+ mins your COL decreases dramatically. Not so in the Bay Area
