I’m new to Research and am currently trying to better understand this space.

Does anyone else feel like they always need to fight for their voice in meetings with stakeholders (developers, product, designers)?

I’m a bit of an introvert and feel like product & devs try to keep me off of the conversations since research will only delay their timeline. When sprints are prioritized and research feels like it’s getting in their way, i struggle to prove my presence.

UXers, Is this a common struggle among Researchers, or do I just need to be more vocal and push my way in? the struggle is so real

Dev/PMs, can you share how you best work with researchers?

Senior researcher here 👋🏻 i think every researcher struggles with that. Something that Is worth considering, though, is whether you are adding complexity to the process. Not saying you are but I have seen a lot of researchers fight for perfect research which seldom can be realized and they’re reticent to offer alternatives. Showing flexibility and explaining the trade offs goes a long way. Another way to demonstrate your value is To demonstrate that you understand their business and design priorities and how their business works. I see a lot of researchers fail to do this - they care about doing the work but not if it’s resonant, clear and helps your partners make choices. Sometimes it can be “I wrote the report, don’t care what happens ✌🏼” vibe. Again, not saying you’re not doing this but can’t hurt to ask if you could do more here and show it in the work and communicate it to your partners. Happy to chat more if you want to message me.

Hello! This is really really helpful. Thank you for empathizing with my post and sharing your perspective. They are great suggestions and things I need to learn to do to be more valuable to the team. They provide a clearer goal for me as a researcher. Thanks so much!

No, design and PM should be very interested in your research and working with you to influence their decisions and thoughts. If not, I might try to change teams because you should be working collaboratively.

    Engineering might be more difficult.

Research makes my job a heck a lot easier not only presenting to my own stakeholders to back up my design with data but also just deciding what to do. Design needs to be grounded in research both before and after the project ships. If your designer is not working with you, run the hell away cause that’s not a good designer.

Gah, you’re awesome. Thank you for your input + for believing in Research in your day-to-day.

It feels like time is always running after our product teams cause they’re all so focused on shipping and meeting timeline, so it becomes a huge struggle for us researchers.

Good to hear an outsider’s perspective. Thank you.
