Stripe vs Coinbase SWE New Grad

Trying to decide between the two. Comp is fairly close around 200-220k. Stripe is paper money though.

The world will be a better place when the smoothbrains on Blind stop fantasizing about Stripe. Here’s why you should go with Coinbase:

    1. Real money > Monopoly money (no IPO guarantee)
    2. Faster promo from what I’ve heard (comp is solid at CB)
    3. More interesting work. Crypto > stupid payment processing app.

Tough decision. I’m at stripe currently and I think we still have room to grow. Stripe could probably ipo at PayPal’s market cap which is about 4x higher than our current valuation. However, I’m very bullish on crypto and since Coinbase and the crypto marketcap is heavily correlated + the ongoing crypto bull run, I could see Coinbase @ $1000+ in the next 2 years.

With Coinbase, you get cash now, but the crypto market will crash (4 year market cycle) along with Coinbase unless they decouple. With stripe, it’s paper money until IPO, but price will likely be more stable once stonks are on the open market.

Best advice I can give you is join the company where your work would be more interesting, which is probably Coinbase. You’d make a ton of money either way so optimize for experience and mental health

    • Stripe revenue is 7B, while PayPal is 21B. I doubt it would be a similar valuation. More likely a bit lower than Square, which has a revenue of 9B and market cap of 130B

Stripe gives you annual RSUs based on present day valuation price right? Basically if the stock doubles then you get half the number of shares the next year? IMO if true this is a really really bad offer and you’d be shooting yourself in the foot. If not true, then yeah, stripe is a great place to get into right now (I say while employed by a competitor lol)

Honestly Coinbase could be a really good lotto ticket. I have a friend who became a millionaire off of the shares/crypto he got over like 2 years

    • Yes thats correct for both stripe and cb with the 1 year stock grants. It also protects you if stock price goes down though but basically can view it as cash
