I currently work at Amazon as an L5. I’ve only been at Amazon for 6-9 months, however, I’m being recruited by the government. I’m on the fence about leaving. I’ve never left a job this early, but surprisingly, the government job is paying $40-$50k more than my current base. (No RSU’s but will receive bonus) My question is this, can I use this offer to negotiate more money from Amazon? I don’t want to leave, but the money and work-life balance benefit seem almost too good to pass up. Thoughts?
Many places have a strict no-negotiation policy. Not sure about Amazon. It never hurts to ask since you have a backup offer anyway. Nobody will hold it against you.
No
Managers can go to bat for you if you are truly indispensable and more money will keep you. I’d expect that at 6-9 months that is pretty unlikely to happen.
I’m a Govie. I️ would say depends on what your goals are, long term earning will be better at Amazon likely but greater job security at fed.
I think Amazon have policy to not to negotiate when an employee wants to leave for better offer. Of course there will be exceptions for so called star employees... Over long term, you experience in private sector will be much more valued that your experience in public sector with the exception of NASA.
Did you get low balled at Amazon? I've worked in govt and having a hard time believing they beat Amazon in terms of comp unless you're a superstar building new propulsion systems or something like that.
Im starting to think I did based on you all’s replies. 🙄
I prefer not to say, because it could possibly give away my identity. But after a meeting with them, they’ve made it abundantly clear I’d come in at $155K, which is the max in my region for the government scale.
Amazon might match the other offer (adjusted to some bullshit that they will give you a little less). However they really have to like you or need you. With less than a year there it's unlikely. What do you do and how much do you make? And why getting out of the tech industry now???
