Berlin Job Offer

I was recently offered a position in Berlin paying €13k/month (€156k/year) + €35k in stock. Also paying all moving expenses + two months signing bonus. Is that a good offer for Berlin? Can I afford a decent place to live? Would it be better to live in the US or EU?

Berlin is very well known for being cheap. You will live a very nice life with that salary

I was earning a similar amount in a neighboring country. It actually became somewhat uncomfortable for me because I was making so much more than everyone else, even professionals. Keep in mind there senior engineers make like 50-60E ... Now I live in the bay with 50% higher TC but significantly worse quality of life.

Thinking about moving to Europe in the near future. How do you find a balance between quality of life and savings?

Apple GdBp18 Oct 19, 2020

Cost of living is significantly cheaper in Europe, so if you are making a US-level salary you can probably still save a lot. Need to watch out for the tax situation though. Many of these countries have extremely high social assurance taxes. If you are planning on living there temporarily many countries have tax treaties with the US where you can avoid paying their social taxes for 3-5 years. Which can become a crazy good deal. My effective tax rate while in Europe was half what I was paying in the US.

That’s a lot of money for Berlin... rent is capped so dirt cheap. You will pay higher taxes but it means you don’t have to pay through your nose for things like healthcare.

Uber bRmc55 Oct 21, 2020

Funny things in life - rent capped but demand is so much higher than supply that actually rent = 0 BC you don't have a flat 😶

Which company pays that much ?

Cisco BrBa4 Oct 23, 2020

I think it depends a lot on which position. For example, no company pays that much for Senior SWE, not even the known high payers like amazon.
