I am ex-FAANG and one reason I left was the personalities of the engineers. I am sociable and have a lot of interests outside of tech so talking shop all day is taxing. If i were to go back, what would be the best FAANG for meeting other sociable engineers with hobbies outside of tech? When I worked at Amazon everybody was too busy to have fun. Facebook I get really similar vibes. Microsoft could work but I hear it's an older crowd and the commute to Redmond could be taxing. LinkedIn/Airbnb was ok but I am American and literally everybody on my loop was Chinese so it gave me weird vibes. Google? I got great vibes but it's obviously the hardest. Could also be a Seattle thing since I am located here; time to relocate to SF?
I like Google. The vibe is good.
I believe it. Are you at HQ?
SEA
FB literally wants to connect people. How can the internal culture be different than that? Sounds hypocritical
Amazon literally wants to deliver goods to people are you delivering goodies in a truck everyday? Lol. Note : don't mistake my tone to be harder or rude, just trying to make a silly joke while pointing at reality.
amazon is the first strand-type company
FB's culture is probably the closest to what you're looking for but it still varies a lot depending on the team
FB (engineering) is a dystopian nightmare of anti social behavior. I’ve seen multiple cases of people sitting next to each other who have never spoken. If you’re looking for any socializing at all stay far away.
Thank you both for input. I'm sure there are good and bad teams but everyone I talk to at FB Seattle sounds more like the latter and the people that do like it are all about work and tech and career, which is fine but I'm trying to diversify.
Because theres no diversity and as an American, I'm going to find more in common with other Americans outside of work.
I find that the sociability of Google engineers is on a downward trend.
lol literally every google engineer i know is an autistic weirdo. i like autistic weirdos though <3
You should do a role in a mostly non-tech team. That’ll solve your problem.
Or make friends on a cross functional team
I totally agree. I have worked at a lot of companies. At most, the culture was great, of course there are some bad things too, but you learn to navigate those things. I have been at Microsoft and I feel like most people are dead inside. It's hard to build friendships there. It's probably due to the fact that we have our own offices.
Any companies you've worked at that had a friendly workforce?
Yeah almost all of them. City of Seattle, the feds, etc. But I think the best way to find people you can connect with is to join the internal groups at your company like the board games group, or religious groups, or race based groups, or tech interest groups, or sports groups, etc.
There’s a popular post on the Amazon channel with some L4 knocking up an L6 at a party. Come get it while it’s hot I guess
Lol my Amazon account got banned for dissing the company otherwise I'd be sitting here with 🍿.
come on tell us non bezonians
