SF/Bay area is a shithole from the perspective of entertainments LA or NY easily beat it but if we take into account career/available jobs/salaries in IT bay area becomes a top place for most of us
Are you a boy or girl?
I grew up in Seattle and have lived in La, Dallas and I am now in Austin. Money is going to go furthest is Austin. Even if the TC pales to that of the bay or Seattle I live in a 4500sqft 5bd w/ office, 3car, theater on the top of a hill with a view for 450k. You might need or want all that. Just an example of the costs associated. The weather is subjectively the best in LA. But, I like Austin’s weather just fine. Though Jan and feb gets some brutally cold and rainy days. If you’re not used to heat, you might have a rough time when spring/summer first hits. But by august/September you’ll be used to it. Then come January you’ll be begging the heat to return. And in March it will. Outdoor activities is the best in Seattle. But weather permitting. If you’re like me who likes to hike and do stuff outside... it’s almost always 45 and raining. Yeah, there’s summer... but it’s July 5th - September 1st. Not only is this a tiny window, everyone else is also trying to get “warm weather” activities done. Everything is crowded and busy. It’s pretty miserable. Truth be told, even in the summer the weather is hit or miss. I can’t count the number of times a BBQ or other adventure was ruined by shitty weather when I was a kid. There’s plenty to do outdoors in Austin. There’s rivers, lakes, woods, trails all within Austin. Though to my issue with Seattle outdoors, it’s crowded. I usually get out of the city and into the hill country. It’s not very far to hit some cool trails, camping and swimming. You’re obviously not going to be doing any skiing. Needless to say, there’s jack shit in LA. You’re going to have a rough time making friends in Seattle. The Seattle freeze is very real. Granted I left in 2015. But, it’s so deeply engrained in the culture there, I don’t see it changing any time soon. The rush of Californians in the 80s didn’t shift that aspect of the culture... You’ll have 0 issues making friends in Austin. Everyone in LA is a miserable materialistic fuck. While the traffic is terrible in Austin. It pales in comparison to Seattle and LA. It’s annoying how much people complain about traffic here.
What companies have good engineering presence in Austin?
Tons of outdoors stuff near LA, not as good as Seattle though. 10 peaks over 10k', rock climbing in tahquitz. Overall the day hikes are much better than endless switchbacks for Seattle trails, and you never have to check the weather. LA is 2 hrs from J tree, 5 hrs from red rock and eastern Sierra; all the good climbing around Seattle is 2 hrs away anyway. Great skiing in mammoth but a long drive, Seattle is definitely better for winter sports with Snoqualmie, Stevens. The only reason I take advantage of the outdoors in Seattle, is that I was introduced to it in LA. Try climbing Mt Baldy in the winter in the morning then relax at the beach in the afternoon.
SF is a city. The Bay Area is a nine county region nothing like SF.
I live in LA, and it’s low key the best tech center nobody knows about. Every FAANG is here + SNAP. A fair amount of early and middle stage start ups. Real Estate much more affordable, tons of stuff to do.
Commute though? Safety? Culture/ppl?
Commute is bad if you can't afford to live in the urban centers, which doesn't apply to most tech people. You can bike to work year round. People are cool, LA IMO is essentially working class. Hollywood has an overstated influence, like financiers with NYC.
Las Vegas is the most LA city outside of LA. Much lower CoL. overall a great place to live if you avoid the Strip

Is it cheaper to eat chipotle everyday than buy groceries ?
How I see it between Seattle, NYC and the Bay All 3 cities you get same slary(with Amazon being a notable exception) Bay Most variety of jobs, HQ of almost all tech Best weather but the most expensive by far. No public trans and not a truly cosmopolitan city like NYC/London NYC- Clearly second tier to the Bay but can keep up with Seattle in terms of job quality. Google/FB have their biggest non HQ offices there but Amazon/Microsoft HQ is in Seattle so it evens out. Bad winters but overall weather is definitely better than Seattle and could be argued better than Bay as you have real summers where people do pool parties and hang out at the beach which doesnt happen in the Bay at all. Manhattan is as expensive as SF but the NYC metro area is pretty cheap if you are okay living outside manhattan. A truly cosmopolitan city with other economy than tech. A very good place to date because of abundance of young women for single guys. Seattle- The most affordable city by far probably the cheapest place to raise a family. Worst weather.
