I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t want to think about work when I’m done for the day. I don’t want to be pinged on slack. I don’t want to check my emails. I want to shut down my computer, turn off my phone, and spend time with my family.

I know our industry is fast paced and very competitive, but sometimes I wish it was “just a job” and it didn’t have to be so intense and high strung all the time. I’m all about producing good quality work when I’m working, but I don’t want my career to be my entire life and a point of high stress all the time if it doesn’t have to be.

Am I dreaming or are there some good companies out there that respect personal time, pay well and aren’t super stressful?

Why do you check your work notifications after the work day? Just don’t. Be efficient and intentional with your time.

You’re right, but I really meant I don’t want to feel like I’m expected to be available after working hours.

Take this from a UX manager, no one expects you to be available after working hours. It’s not in our job description to work our people after hours or beyond 40 hours.

We are accountable for making sure that our designers are meeting the bar for their role and level, and clearing blockers for them.

Reach out to your manager if you feel like you’re not getting accurate feedback on your work or there are unreasonable expectations. That is on YOU to let your manager know.

LinkedIn and Meta both have very good design cultures with moderate levels of stress.

But if you really want to chill, look at health insurance companies, particularly ones with extremely high average tenures. You'll see 25-hour work weeks there if you join the right teams.

Really I’d think meta would be crazy. For health insurance companies, any in particular?

Meta is hugely team-dependent. But for the most part, design is treated well and respected. There's a lot work, but it's pretty easy once you get acquainted with the people and tools that are in place to help you do your job.

For health insurance companies, United and Anthem are both good for wlb. I don't know Kaiser as well, but I have acquaintances who love working for them. Insurance, in general, is pretty chill unless you're in customer support.

Interesting hadn’t even really considered Microsoft. Are they fully remote now? Any info on their interview process?
      Feb 13
    • Yes to macs. You can request to be remote but depends on the manager. Interview is standard but kind of depends on the team. Sometimes there is whiteboard but sometimes not.

Go work for Indeed. I hear the WLB there is pretty damn good for designers. People take some a lot of PTO there according to a friend.
