i just got my drivers license and dont feel quite comfortable about driving esp lane changing. i was told some recent models have obstacle detection, lane departure which can prove quite handy. how does one go about this search? i am not a fancy car person but would like to know the best for the job.
Don’t get a car with all that crap, learn to be a good driver first. Please.
Chicken and egg problem. Cant learn to be a good driver in a rundown. Tried that and rammed into a car in downtown palo alto
It’s not a chicken and egg problem, that’s not how it works. Technology is not a fix for poor fundamentals. A CA DL is unfortunately not good enough, you should take more lessons with instructors until you’re competent enough. Until then, you’re putting yourself and others at risk. Please don’t do that.
Subaru Eyesight is a good one.
Very good system and awd completes package for an entry level car.
Wrx STI it is then!

First of all, get a used car. You are obviously going to test drive it, so you can see if it has all the things you want. Give yourself a lot of time and you'll get a great deal on Craigslist
Don’t rely on electronics as a crutch for not having these skills. Focus on this technique. This is from automotive racing and applies in real world driving: Your car goes where your eyes go, so to keep the car in the lane, look far ahead towards the next car and the horizon. Allow your peripherals to take in the lane lines. Never stare at the lane line next to your car trying to track your car directly in the center of the lane. You will never keep the car straight that way. When changing lanes, it’s the same thing. First check your blind spot and mirror, then look at the path you want the car to take. This is the secret to assertive, smooth lane changes, especially changing lanes in the middle of a curved road.

Watch a YouTube video about adjusting your mirrors properly. If you can see your own car, they are too far in. Plan your lane changes well in advance. Haste makes mistakes. Check your rear view, side mirror, signal, turn your head and check over shoulder, change lanes.
Buy a used Toyota Corolla. It’ll be a bit beat up when you’re done with it but it’ll be a good starter car that can take the beating.
Hot wheels!
No car is the best decision if you have good transportation.
