So I've been at Amazon for 6 months now. So it's a pretty short tenure (sign on bonus is prorated monthly, won't owe that, but will owe relocation). But I feel like I was downleveled, and after spending the effort to ramp up to a team and contribute, the team was reorged and I got put into a team with twice the ops load. And nothing on the road map for new features, just fixing tech debt. Everyone is interviewing and leaving the company now or internally transferring, and I am getting stuck with their work. I passed google hiring committee last year but there was no HC for L3s so I couldn't team match. I have 2.5 YOE, and feel like I was downleveled. I would like to take a month to refresh on LC and prepare for another round of interviews, and I think I can gun for an SDE II position with 2 YOE. Is this too early to leave? Is it a good time for HC, with Q1 starting soon?
Lol what you described is quintessential Amazon
Yeah so here's what happened to me: I joined the team and rushed to ramp up, and rushed to join the on call rotation. tech survey comes out, my manager gets blasted, bad reviews. we also worked hard to scale and prepare for a big event for our org. 3 engineers internally transfer and others start looking. After the event was over, our manager gets sent to another team and our team reorgs. Two of us are left in the original team and we are reorged to another, owning this application (with a high ops load) and now have to onboard with another. That other one also has a high ops load. And our 2020 road map is reducing the ops, which is fine but I've done that for so long in my career that I want to branch out. I'm the only one from my original team not currently interviewing for a job.
Yeah dude GTFO. At the very least switch teams internally
U felt downleveled at both the places!?
Not my original job, which wasnt a FANG so I don't think Amazon recruiters took too much stock into my level there. So I interviewed for SDE1 and it was a comp bump so I took it. Same with google L3, it probably would've been a comp bump. But now I want to gun for SDE II and not just looking for a comp increase. I could stay at Amazon and do it but it's difficult with constant reorgs to build rapport and get promoted :/
Yeah there's a dude currently on my team who's had a delayed promo for like a year due to the same problems you're talking about. Leave now, either externally or find a team internally you can grow in (look for a team building new shit. No tech debt and no ops until the stuff is built out)
Sounds like everyone agrees you are new college grad level
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Join my team. We promote anyone.
Which team are you on?
OP, which team are you currently in at Amazon?

HC result is valid for a year. Cant emphasize enough contact your recruter now and if the recruiter is being unreasonable dm me I can context you with a very friendly gcp rectuiter.
