Received an offer from Microsoft for a summer internship last week and I'm pretty excited about it. Recruiter said interns don't typically choose teams but since I did well on interviews + we're still early in the recruiting season she can try to see if teams I'm interested in are taking interns. So what teams are interesting or good in Microsoft? Can anyone shed a bit more light on the Cortana team? Additionally, I think Windows OS, XBox, and Azure seem pretty cool as well. tbh idk that much about Microsoft teams and divisions, I'm open to any and all input :) TC: 0
IS
Also anyone know what the experiences and devices division does?
Azure is the up and coming place to be, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only interesting place to work (or that all teams there are great). That said, I’ve heard awesome things about Azure IoT. Windows is regarded as a boring, dinosaur age product to work on BUT I’m in Windows Data Science and that org is totally fascinating. Lots of cool problems to solve now that we’re part of Azure.
MSIT
Can you elaborate a bit more?
He is pulling your leg.
Azure Active Directory
I work in the Cortana org. Any particular parts of Cortana that interest you?
I have a bit of NLP experience (with GCP ) + I have written batch scripts that activate on Cortana voice commands so I guess I just really like the product since I think it's really cool. How is it in the Cortana org?
If you're interested in NLP you can ask for the LG (Language Generation) team in Cortana. Alternatively you can ask for some speech service stuff in Cognitive Services.
The Windows OS team is actually a pretty interesting and promising (career-wise) right now since they moved into Azure and deal with host/ guest OS and linux. I'm thinking about moving myself...
Try Sigma - the media division. Video, audio, codecs, etc. There are many subgroups.
Not a good idea. No offense to Sigma, their engineer are really strong, but the skills you'll learn there probably won't be useful at all outside of MSFT. I would recommend working in a team that will allow you to learn skills that have strong demand in growing field. For example, any team working in large distributed environment, maybe something in AI, etc.
Fair enough, although it depends on what you are interested in and what concepts you focus on. Many majors companies are doing their version of a/v service, apps, transcoding, etc. Google, Facebook, Amazon, apple, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Audible, various android developers, etc. Many a/v concepts are universal. As are many core programming practices. Even games include cut scenes and video clips.
Azure is not a team, it’s a huge division with tens of thousands of engineers, dude. So is Windows and Xbox
Haha yeah, sorry if I wasn't clear enough in my post. Wanted to ask I guess about general teams/divisions
