I’m interested in being an engineer at adobe, Spotify, Pixar, etc. Currently I’m a support engineer at MS with a non traditional background (self taught). I have the opportunity for apprenticeship as a video software engineer for hourly wage (~60% salary cut) and no benefits at a well connected and well funded start up. Is it worth the trade off to learn? I’ve been taking weekend classes but it will be different from the hands on learning I will gain from the job. If my performance is good I will have the opportunity to convert to full time after 6 MO. If you were to look at my resume as a hiring manager or peer, would you appreciate the initiative or do I have a better chance of moving to a large company staying in support or business program manager roles at MS and continuing to take classes and learn on the side?
Not worth the trade off for that kind of paycut.
I'm interested in this too, currently in support at MS but want to move into engineering. Also debating about taking a 40% pay to join another company as a junior SWE vs keep studying on the side and hope to get SWE at MS one day
Yea cuz you can’t really study on the side while in CSS because they like to work us to death ☠️
