I’ve never really read any sci-fi novels, and this is probably the best place to ask. I already own Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age and the Snow Crash.
Flow my tears the policeman said is my favorite. The authors I like best are Phillip K Dick, Samuel Delany, Kurt Vonnegut, Piers Anthony and Robert Silverberg.
Interested to see what other people recommend on this thread. I’d suggest almost anything written by Richard Morgan (try Market Forces), Neil Asher or Iain M Banks. Peter F Hamilton’s not bad, although you need to pick and choose a bit with his novels. James Corey’s Expanse series is good (better than the TV version which is worth a watch anyway). If you like “grunt” focused scifi then the Old Man’s War series by Scaldi, The Forever War (Haldemann) and Embedded (Dan Abnett) are all solid picks IMO.
Speaking of Haldeman, I had a lot of fun reading his "Accidental Time Machine".
