Best time to switch jobs in GC process

May 17, 2021 7 Comments

Currently waiting to transfer to H1B this October (got selected FY22 thank god). Want to start GC process immediately in Oct, company already okay-ed it.
Now the question is this…
When is the best time to switch jobs?
I want to enter FAANG, for better TC (so I can save more and FIRE faster, get out of the grinding rat race) and also better work-life balance.
With the different steps for GC, is it best to
1. just transfer after on H1B and start GC in new company or
2. can I still change jobs and transfer GC filing progress to new company after I140 filed, etc. (company most likely to abandon filing if I leave halfway) or
3. stay in current company until after GC fully received then move?
Non-Indian/China national so should not have backlog wait, but not quite sure either.
Thanks for any help/advice.

  • Try to switch immediately. Currently I-485 itself takes about a year for EB3

  • If you are planning to move jobs for better TC, then starting Oct move to a new job and then in your new company start the GC process. Most companies have a 6 months to 1 year wait period before they start the process. But you should be good as you have 6 years of H1B.

  • I'd suggest you transfer immediately after H1B is active in October. Start fresh with your new company.

My advice is get GC in 1 year at current company and then feel free to take big risks as you won’t be H1-B dependent. Maybe you can also start your own business.

Is it best to wait for company to complete the GC process with low TC (150k Bay Area 2yoe), or try to switch to FAANG for better TC and restart the GC process? Probably 1.5 years left for GC with how slow things are. Hate my TC but job has good WLB and good relationship with manager
