Friends, What’s the best possible way to cover any gaps in health insurance while switching employer. My current employer will terminate my benefits the day I resign while the new employer can offer me insurance benefits only next month onwards. How should I deal with this situation and ensure I have health insurance in that transitioning period. Please advise. YOE- 5 TC - 133
You should be covered by COBRA until the end of the month when you resign
Thanks mate, Do I need to call my insurance and ask to be covered by COBRA? Can COBRA be extended to more days if needed?
I’ve usually gotten COBRA documents from former employer a week or so after my last day.
I got the short term United Healthcare insurance. Cost me $63 for a month (including the registration fee)
Nice, you mean you took UHC as an individual not an employee and it’s only 63 a month? I can do that too if that’s the case
Yes as an individual.
My employer’s website says it valid only until the last date of employment.
Leave at the beginning of the month. Insurance will be covered until the end of the month.
I was in the same situation. I got the COBRA documents in the mail a week after my last day. You have 60 days to enroll in Cobra. It is retroactive. You can use this to your advantage. If something comes up , you can enroll in Cobra and it will cover your expenses. Otherwise, keep the cobra mail and wait for the other insurance to kick in.
This is the route I go when switching jobs.
You can wait and get by without insurance. Use COBRA only if needed because Cobra kicks in retroactivity from the termination of your prior employment.
Health insurance policies are by month. If you are covered on the first day of the month, you are covered for the whole month. Set your start date on the same month as your quit date you should be good.
Usually health insurance last until end of the month because it’s paid by month.
Ideally yes. Mine wasn’t- the ex employer ended it on the last day and the new employer starts it only on the 1st
